Liverpool fans go wild after Champions League final win

Liverpool – The delirious scenes kicked off as soon as the final whistle went, while the party had been well underway in Liverpool before the game even started.

Hordes of football supporters descended on the Spanish capital earlier in the day, with the total number of supporters in Madrid much higher than the 16,000 tickets made available to both sets of fans.

Those not able to catch the match from inside the stadium were forced to find a pub showing the football after authorities decided the two designated fan zones should close just before kick-off, while officials ruled nowhere in the city centre should be able to show the game on a big screen.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson, who had written to his counterpart in Madrid to request a giant screen broadcast the match, said “UEFA guidance” was behind the decision.

He added in a tweet on Saturday evening: “Told 14,000 bars and restaurants and cafes open with screens.”

The historic final took place on a hot weekend of bumper sport, as Liverpool beat first-time finalists Tottenham Hotspur – the first all-English final in a top tier European club competition since 2008.

Fans who didn’t make it to Madrid flooded pubs and bars across the country as Brits enjoyed a 27C sizzler on the hottest day of the year so far.

In Spain, players competed in a roasting 30C 9pm kick-off.

They were cheered on by 17,000 supporters from each side, while thousands more filled the 68,000 capacity venue.
